The Dungeon Master's AI Companion Has Arrived

RPGX Studios announces the launch of RPGX AI Assistant v2.0 and RPGX Proton (Beta) — a unified AI ecosystem built for the modern Foundry VTT game master.

April 2025  ·  Fort Worth, TX

RPGX Studios today announced two landmark releases for Foundry Virtual Tabletop game masters: the newly unified RPGX AI Assistant v2.0 module and RPGX Proton (Beta), a standalone desktop application that brings full local AI inference directly to the tabletop. Together, they form a world-aware AI ecosystem that helps GMs manage their worlds, answer questions mid-session, and deliver richer, more immersive play experiences — without sending a single word of their campaign to the cloud.

Running a tabletop RPG campaign in Foundry VTT is a creative achievement. It is also an enormous administrative undertaking. Between managing hundreds of journal entries, tracking dozens of NPCs, adjudicating lore disputes at the table, and keeping the narrative coherent across months of play, the modern game master faces a cognitive load that even the best digital tools have only partly addressed.

RPGX Studios was founded on the conviction that artificial intelligence — deployed privately, locally, and with deep awareness of a GM's own campaign data — is the missing piece. Today's releases represent the most complete realisation of that vision to date.

Free — Foundry VTT Module

RPGX AI Assistant v2.0

One module. Two tools merged. A world that knows itself.

The original RPGX suite shipped as two separate Foundry modules: the AI Assistant, focused on live chat with a language model, and the AI Librarian, focused on ingesting campaign documents into a searchable knowledge base. While both were praised by early users, the split architecture created friction — GMs had to configure two modules, navigate two interfaces, and reconcile two sets of settings.

RPGX AI Assistant v2.0 merges them into a single, cohesive module. Every capability from both predecessors is present — and substantially expanded.

  • Streaming AI chat with live cursor— Ask questions and watch the answer form in real time, rendered in full Markdown for clean formatting of lists, headings, and stat blocks.

  • World-aware Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)— The module connects to your own local RAG server, indexing your journals and actor sheets so the AI draws on your campaign lore, not generic training data.

  • Gmail-style Document Manager— A full-featured panel for browsing, filtering, selecting, and ingesting actors and journal entries into the knowledge base. Checkbox selection, per-document status, and bulk operations replace the old one-at-a-time workflow.

  • Knowledge Base settings panel— View exactly which documents are in the RAG index, ingest or remove individual entries, and inspect world-scoped database status at a glance.

  • Broadcast to Chat— Queue any AI response to appear as a Foundry chat message, visible to the entire table, without copy-pasting a word.

  • Language model flexibility— Switch between any Ollama-served model mid-session, including a free-text field for custom model identifiers not in the dropdown.

  • Startup performance guidance— A dismissible reminder helps new users understand the hardware requirements for local AI inference before they attempt a query.

Paid — Desktop Application (Beta)

RPGX Proton (Beta)

Local AI. Zero cloud. Full power. For the GM who hosts remotely.

Not every Foundry game master hosts their server locally. Many use remote hosting services, cloud VMs, or dedicated TTRPG hosting providers. For those GMs, the original RPGX modules posed a problem: the AI backend — the Ollama inference engine and the RAG server — had to run somewhere, and configuring them separately required technical confidence most players shouldn't need.

RPGX Proton solves this completely. It is a native Windows desktop application that bundles the Ollama LLM inference engine, the RPGX RAG server, and a full-featured query interface into a single install. The GM runs Proton on their gaming PC; Foundry lives wherever it lives; the two talk to each other. No configuration, no command lines, no compromises.

  • Bundled local inference— Ollama runs as a managed background process inside Proton. No separate install. No terminal. Pull a model from the interface and start querying in minutes.

  • Integrated RAG server— The Node.js RAG server starts automatically with the app and manages per-world SQLite databases. All AI queries are grounded in your campaign documents.

  • First-run setup wizard— A guided onboarding flow captures your Foundry URL and stores configuration privately in your system's user data directory — never in cloud-synced folders.

  • Query / Chat panel— A full AI chat interface inside the app, with model selection, world context switching, and streaming NDJSON responses.

  • GM Notebook— A persistent, session-spanning note-taking space built directly into the app. Entries can be copied into any world's RAG database, making ad-hoc notes instantly searchable during play.

  • Broadcast queue— Proton-generated AI replies can be queued for delivery to Foundry's chat interface, bridging the desktop app and the virtual table seamlessly.

  • Global knowledge base— A cross-world database lets GMs store system-wide reference material (monster manuals, rulebooks, setting bibles) that informs queries in every campaign simultaneously.

"Game masters pour hundreds of hours into their worlds. RPGX exists so that work doesn't vanish the moment someone asks a question you didn't expect."— Ashton Rogers, Founder, RPGX Studios / X8 Studios

The design philosophy behind both releases is unchanged from RPGX Studios' founding principle: a game master's world belongs to them. Every query, every NPC name, every plot secret stays on their hardware. No campaign lore is transmitted to external servers. The AI that answers questions during a session is running on the GM's own machine, grounded in documents the GM wrote.

This matters especially as AI-assisted tools proliferate in the TTRPG space. Many such tools route queries through third-party APIs, where campaign data becomes training material or is stored indefinitely. RPGX takes the opposite approach: the intelligence is local, the context is yours, and the session ends when you close the app.

RPGX AI Assistant v2.0 is designed for game masters who already self-host Foundry VTT and are comfortable running a Node.js backend alongside it. RPGX Proton extends the same capabilities to the broader audience of GMs using managed hosting services, offering a no-configuration path to private local AI.
